Our First Challenge – North and South

Greetings and Salutations!

Do you like a good book? Are you the sort of reader that has trouble putting your novel down once you’ve begun? Are you also the crafty type that loves cardmaking, scrapbooking, stamping, and any sort of malarkey that involves ink and paper? Don’t you think the two go together? We do!

Welcome to our Inspired by Ink Challenge Blog – sort of like a ‘book club’ but not really. Every month, one of the Inklings team (Australian Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators under the leadership of Jayne Mercer) will set a book challenge, that will be the theme for that month. It is up to you how that book inspires you – it could be social themes contained in the story, a quote, a particular description of a character or scene in the book – you may even be inspired by a movie version of the book. Any paper creations inspired by the written word, be they cards, scrapbooking, ATC’s or 3D items can be submitted. Let us know what inspired your creation.

For our first challenge, the challenge is North and South – a novel by Elizabeth Gaskell written in 1855. If you haven’t read it, you’re in for a treat! It has everything – cute country cottages, religious doubts, industrial strife, class conflict, riots, maternal struggles, interfering relatives, naval mutiny, friendship, sorrow, and of course – true love.

If you’re a fan of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, North and South has many similar twists and turns as the main characters, Margaret Hale and John Thornton continually rub each other the wrong way. In some ways, I find North and South to be a more ‘human’ book than Pride and Prejudice – it’s not as witty, but the emotion continually bubbles along just under the surface, occasionally exploding up to the surface – and the hero John Thornton, is to me, much more admirable than Mr Darcy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Austen fan, but North and South just gets to me.

If you don’t think you’ll have time to read the novel, you could watch the amazing BBC production – even though they’ve made some major changes, I forgave them long ago, because I couldn’t imagine a better cast. Here’s a teaser for you…

Phwoar! Richard Armitage, you could be my Mr Thornton any time!

The challenge will run until the first Sunday of the month (6th November). Please add your submission to the linky below – and don’t forget to let us know what inspired you!

Cheers,

Dani
